I hope you all have a safe, fun-filled holiday! I want to take a minute and tell you all about a great organization that supports our soldiers.
A little less than one year ago, I stumbled upon a great organization called Operation Paperback. In a nutshell, their mission is to provide used paperback books to our troops all around the world. Many soldiers don’t have ready access to reading materials and this is a great way to give some of your own books a second life. I’ve sent two shipments of books overseas since I joined last October. When you join, you’ll receive updates about what kinds of books service members would like. For instance, a soldier may want books by James Patterson. If you have some you would like to send, you can then ship a box to that soldier. You can ship your books Media Mail to the APO so the cost is minimal. You can also donate postage to Operation Paperback to help other members/groups ship books to our troops.

* I’ve stumbled upon another great website that lets you give back. You all really need to check out Free Rice. Test your vocabulary skills and for each word you get right, 20 grains of rice are donated to feed the world’s hungry through the UN World Food Program. I’ve played and the words do get pretty challenging….and I’m a “word nerd”.
* A little birdie reminded me that today is National Doughnut Day. Participating Krispy Kreme stores will be giving out free doughnuts (one per person) this Friday, June 6. The closest Krispy Kreme to me is miles and miles away…which is a good thing because my waistline doesn’t need one! I did notice on their website that when you sign up for “Friends of Krispy Kreme” online, you’ll get an email coupon for a free glazed doughnut (to use on another day!)
* Speaking of more free food goodies…..next Sunday, 6/15, dads can get a FREE cup or cone at TCBY in honor of Father’s Day. Then on Monday, June 16th, from 2pm – 8pm, participating A & W restaurants are giving out FREE root beer floats.
* Have you all seen the Red Box DVD rental kiosks in certain stores? I’ve seen them at my local Wal-Mart, but never paid much attention to them as I use Netflix. I knew that they were affordable and that you could rent movies for around $1.
